Sore throat
A sore throat can refer to pain, difficulty swallowing, a scratchy sensation, or any other irritation felt in the throat.
- Treatments for a sore throat will depend on the underlying cause of the irritation. Sore throats caused by viral infections, like viral pharyngitis, a common cold, or the flu, may be addressed by treating the sore throat symptoms with over-the-counter medications, such as throat lozenges, or with prescription steroids in more severe cases. Bacterial infections, like strep pharyngitis, are treated with antibiotics. A sore throat caused by an allergy may require allergy medicines or reducing your exposure to an allergen.
